Niche perfumery is fragrance made by independent or artistic houses that prioritise the quality of materials and the originality of the composition over mass-market appeal. Where designer scents are built to please the many, niche scents are built to express a vision — richer materials, higher concentrations, smaller batches, and signatures you won't smell on everyone in the room.

It comes down to concentration of perfume oil. Eau de Toilette (EDT) sits around 5–15%, Eau de Parfum (EDP) around 15–20%, and Extrait de Parfum (Parfum) 20–40% or more. Higher concentration generally means richer, longer-lasting scent that projects more softly and intimately. Extrait isn't simply 'stronger' — it's deeper and closer to the skin, while a good EDP often projects further.

Longevity is how long a scent lasts on your skin; sillage is the trail it leaves as you move. Both depend on the materials, the concentration and your own skin chemistry — dry skin holds scent for less time than well-moisturised skin. As a guide, most EDPs last 6–10 hours, while Extraits and resin-heavy orientals can last well over a day on clothing.
